Bulgaria stamps year 1989 Fauna – Horses / Birds
Bulgaria is home to a variety of horse breeds, both domesticated and wild, reflecting the country’s rich equestrian heritage. Among these, the Konik horse stands out as a significant example of rewilding efforts aimed at restoring the Tarpan, an extinct wild horse.
Key Horse Breeds
1. Konik Horse:
- The Konik (Equus caballos) is a feral breed that roams the Rhodope Mountains, representing a recovery of the Tarpan (Equus ferus ferus) lineage. This breed was developed through selective breeding of domestic horses that resemble the Tarpan in appearance and behavior.
- Characteristics include a grey to grey-brown coat, dark mane and tail, and an average height of 133–135 cm. They are known for their resilience and adaptability to harsh environments, able to thrive on low-nutritional food sources.
2. East Bulgarian Horse:
- This breed is a light riding and draft horse that originated around 1900 from Kabiuk stallions and Thoroughbreds. They are recognized for their strength, good temperament, and versatility in various equestrian disciplines.
- Typically found in chestnut, bay, or black colors, East Bulgarian horses are well-suited for both work and leisure riding.
3. Oriental Bulgarian Horse:
- Known for its gentle nature and energetic demeanor, the Oriental Bulgarian horse is another important breed in Bulgaria. This breed is characterized by its resistance and activity levels, making it suitable for various riding purposes.
4. Pleven Horse:
- Developed from local horses crossed with Arabian and Anglo-Arabian bloodlines since 1898, the Pleven is recognized as a half-bred horse with a focus on endurance and agility
