St. Vincent and the Grenadines, commonly referred to as St. Vincent, is an island country in the Caribbean. It was formerly a British colony and gained independence on October 27, 1979.

Before independence, St. Vincent was under British colonial rule for several centuries. The island was initially settled by the French in the 17th century but came under British control through various treaties and agreements. It was formally ceded to Britain in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years’ War.

During its time as a British colony, St. Vincent was primarily an agricultural economy, with sugarcane being a major crop. The British also established a system of plantation agriculture reliant on enslaved labor from Africa.

After gaining independence in 1979, St. Vincent and the Grenadines became a sovereign nation within the Commonwealth of Nations. It is now a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch of the United Kingdom serves as the ceremonial head of state represented by a Governor-General. The country’s capital is Kingstown, located on the main island of St. Vincent.
