Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author who is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time. His book Philosophy Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, laid the foundations for classical mechanics by describing the three laws of motion and the universal law of gravitation. Newton’s three laws of motion explain the relationship between a body and the forces acting upon it, laying the foundation for classical mechanics. His law of universal gravitation showed that gravity applies universally, allowing calculations of orbital motions. He invented the reflecting telescope and developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism separates white light into a visible spectrum. Newton shares credit with Gottfried Leibniz for developing infinitesimal calculus, one of the most important mathematical accomplishments in history. His other major works include Optic’s on the nature of light and color, and writings on religion and alchemy. His immense scientific contributions spanning mathematics, optics, physics, and astronomy led to him being considered one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time. His work is a keystone of the scientific revolution.
