Mostar year 2003 Christianity father M. Divkovic, 1563-1631 postage stamps

Father Marko Đivo Frančević, commonly known as Father Marko Divković, was a Croatian writer, linguist, and Franciscan friar who lived during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was born in 1563 in the region of Duvno, which is now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but was then part of the Kingdom of Croatia, a part of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Divković is primarily known for his significant contributions to Croatian literature and linguistics. He is best remembered for his work on the Glagolitic script, an ancient script used in the medieval Croatian Church Slavonic language. Divković’s most notable achievement was the publication of “Catholic Catechism” (Kathechismus), which was printed in 1649, after his death. This work was written in the Croatian language using the Glagolitic script and played a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of Croatian cultural identity during a time of political and cultural challenges.
