Baden was a historical state in what is now southwestern Germany. It emerged in the 12th century as the Margraviate of Baden and went through various territorial changes over the centuries.

In 1806, it was raised to the status of a Grand Duchy by Napoleon Bonaparte, becoming the Grand Duchy of Baden. It was one of the most progressive states in terms of constitutionalism and reforms during the early 19th century.

After World War I, Baden became a republic within the Weimar Republic, until the rise of Nazi Germany. In 1945, after World War II, it was dissolved and later became part of the newly formed state of Baden-Württemberg through a merger with Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern.
