Austria 1949 War Charity Stamp set MNH
In 1949, Austria issued a significant semi-postal set known as the “Repatriates and Prisoners of War” (Heimkehrer) charity issue. These stamps were designed to raise funds to support the social reintegration of soldiers returning from captivity and to aid the families of those still missing after WWII.
The 1949 “Repatriates” Set
This set is highly valued by collectors of post-war European history for its evocative designs by Wilhelm Dachauer, a master of Austrian stamp art.

Other “Charity” Issues of 1949
Because 1949 was a year of reconstruction and social aid in Austria, there were two other major charity sets you might be looking for:
- “Happy Childhood” (Child Welfare): A 4-stamp set (Easter theme) featuring children and animals (Michel #929–932). The surcharges supported child welfare programs.
- UNICEF Issue: A single blue 1-Schilling stamp issued in May 1949 to support the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund.
Collector’s Tip
The Repatriates (Prisoners of War) set is the one most commonly referred to as the “War Charity” set. A “Mint Never Hinged” (MNH) set currently retails for approximately $15–$25, depending on the centering and gum quality. Used sets are often slightly cheaper but must have clear, authentic cancellations to be of high value.
