St. Stephen’s Cathedral serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. The cathedral, located in the Stephansplatz, showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, a form largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365). It stands on the remnants of two earlier churches, the first being a parish church consecrated in 1147. As the most significant religious edifice in Vienna, St. Stephen’s Cathedral has witnessed numerous pivotal events in Habsburg and Austrian history. Its multi-colored tile roof has also made it one of the city’s most iconic symbols.
