This was part of the first definitive stamp series issued after the 1867 reorganization that formed the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Previous stamps only said “Austria” but this new series had “K.K Reichspost” for Imperial and Royal Mail Service.
The 25kr stamp paid the single weight letter rate to foreign destinations outside of the German-Austrian Postal Union at that time. It sees moderate demand from collectors, especially in very fine used condition on cover. Mint hinged examples in sound condition are not rare but still have decent value.
This classically engraved high value with the monarch’s portrait was a handsome and elegant design typical of European stamps in that era. It remained in use for about 15 years until the next definitive series appeared in the early 1880s. An attractive and historically important stamp representing the early Austro-Hungarian period.
