Aland Island year 1991/2006 WWF Flora Fauna stamps

The Åland Islands have issued a variety of stamps featuring flora and fauna, reflecting the region’s rich natural heritage. In 1991, notable stamps included depictions of local flowers such as the marsh marigold and the arctic bramble. The stamps from 2006 also highlighted the island’s wildlife and plant species, including the lesser white-fronted goose and the common pasqueflower.

Åland Post has a detailed catalogue of these stamps, which are created to showcase the nature, culture, and history of the islands. Each year, around 16 new stamps are issued, selected by a committee that includes representatives from various parts of Åland society. These stamps are designed to promote the unique characteristics of Åland, making them a valuable collection for philatelists.

1991 Aland WWF Stamps: This set contained two stamps depicting the following subjects:

  1. Chequered Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon) – A butterfly species found in Aland.
  2. Yellow Water-lily (Nuphar lutea) – An aquatic flowering plant native to the region.

2006 Aland WWF Stamps: The 2006 WWF issue from Aland also had two stamps featuring:

  1. Shrill Carder Bee (Bombus sylvarum) – A bumblebee species facing threats.
  2. Baltic Grayling (Oeneis jutta) – A butterfly found in coastal areas of the Baltic Sea.

These special stamp issues were part of the long-running WWF series produced by Aland Post to raise funds and awareness for conservation efforts focused on the unique flora and fauna of the Aland archipelago region between Finland and Sweden.
