The 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne’s coronation as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire occurred in 2000. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day, 800 AD, in Rome’s Old St. Peter’s Basilica.
