🔬 The Anthracothere (The “Coal Beast”)

The Anthracothere was an ancient, pig-like mammal that lived approximately 25 million years ago (Late Oligocene).

  • Slovenian Significance: Its genus name, Anthracotherium, literally translates to “coal beast,” because its fossil remains were often discovered by miners in the coal mines of the Zasavje region (near Hrastnik, Trbovlje, and Zagorje ob Savi) beginning in the mid-19th century.
  • Habitat: It was a large animal, up to two meters long and weighing around 250 kg, and is believed to have spent a lot of time in the water, feeding on leaves and wetland plants in the forests and marshes that covered the area.
  • The Stamp Design: The stamp typically depicts both the reconstruction of the living mammal and its fossilized skeleton.

This issue is the fourth in the “Fossil Mammals of Slovenia” series, which also features the Cave Bear (2016), the Cave Lion (2017), and the Mastodon (2018).
