United Nations Geneva stamps year 1983 Paintings by Hundertwasser set MHN
The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) office in Geneva issued a commemorative set of stamps in 1983 featuring the paintings of the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
🎨 Hundertwasser’s UN Geneva Stamps (1983)
- Theme: The stamps were issued to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Droits de L’Homme 1948-1983).
- Designer: Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This was a very notable occasion, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations personally commissioned Hundertwasser to create the designs.
- Set: There was a series of six commemorative stamps issued simultaneously by the three UNPA offices: New York, Geneva, and Vienna, with different denominations for each office. The Geneva stamps were denominated in Swiss Francs (FS.).
- Geneva Denominations (Examples): Some of the individual stamps in the Geneva set had face values such as FS. 1.20 (for the design “Right to Create”). The set is often collected as a pair (2v) or the full set with different denominations/formats.
- Popularity: The stamps were widely acclaimed, and Hundertwasser won the Premio Internazionale Asiago d’arte filatelica for the best postage stamp in the world for 1983 for one of the designs.
💰 Collecting Value
The value of these stamps varies widely depending on several factors:
- Condition: Are they Mint Never Hinged (MNH), Used/Cancelled (CTO), or on a First Day Cover (FDC)? MNH stamps in perfect condition are generally more valuable than used ones.
- Format: Are they individual stamps, a pair (2v), a full set, a souvenir sheet (m/ss), or a First Day Cover?
- Signature: A First Day Cover or art piece signed by Hundertwasser is extremely rare and highly valuable, as he seldom signed his works.
