France postage stamps year 1926 War Orphans Fund Used
The 1926 French postage stamps for the War Orphans Fund (“Orphelins de la Guerre”) are part of a series of semi-postal stamps, meaning they were sold for a price higher than their face value, with the surcharged amount going to the fund for children orphaned by World War I.
Based on philatelic catalogs (like Yvert et Tellier), the 1926 issue is generally considered the 3rd series for War Orphans and includes a set of four values (Yvert numbers 229 to 232):
- 2c + 1c (Brown-lilac, depicting a Widow at the Cemetery – Veuve au cimetière)
- 10c + 5c (Green, depicting Alsatian Woman at the Belfort Lion – Alsacienne au Lion de Belfort)
- 1F + 25c (Red-lilac, depicting Victory or La Victoire)
- 5F + 1F (Blue and Black, depicting The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 on the Arc de Triomphe, also known as La Marseillaise – Le Départ des Volontaires de 1792)
The stamps were designed by Louis Dumoulin and engraved by Léon Ruffé. The issue date for the 3rd series was around December 27, 1926.
