Russia – USSR postage stamp year 1957 Space Sputnik Tsiolkovsky MNH
The USSR issued a famous postage stamp in 1957 to commemorate the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, marking the dawn of the Space Age. The stamp, known as the Sputnik 1 commemorative stamp, features artwork celebrating the satellite’s historic achievement.
While Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was not directly involved in the Sputnik program (he passed away in 1935), his theoretical work on rocketry and space exploration heavily influenced Soviet space endeavors. Some 1957 stamps may also honor his legacy alongside the Sputnik achievement, as Tsiolkovsky was considered the “father of astronautics.”
