Labuan year 1892/93 stamps – Queen Victoria – Engraved

British North Borneo, also known as North Borneo, was a British protectorate located in the northern part of the island of Borneo. The territory roughly corresponds to the present-day state of Sabah in Malaysia.

The British North Borneo Company, a British chartered company, was granted control over the territory in the late 19th century, primarily for its valuable natural resources such as timber, rubber, and minerals. The company administered the territory under British oversight until it became a British protectorate in 1888.

British North Borneo was governed by the British colonial office until 1946 when it became a crown colony. It remained under British administration until 1963 when it gained independence and joined the newly formed Federation of Malaysia along with Malaya, Singapore, and Sarawak. However, Singapore later became an independent nation in 1965.

Today, Sabah is one of the 13 states of Malaysia and retains a unique cultural identity within the country. It is known for its biodiversity, natural beauty, and diverse indigenous communities.
