Jovan Sterija Popović (1806–1856) was a Serbian playwright, educator, and cultural reformer, recognized as one of the most important figures in Serbian literature and theater. He played a crucial role in the development of Serbian drama and education during the 19th century. Sterija Popović worked as a teacher and educator for much of his life. He was appointed as a professor at the newly established Grandes écoles in Belgrade (now the University of Belgrade) in 1838, where he taught rhetoric and literature. Sterija Popović is best known for his contributions to Serbian theater. He wrote numerous plays that were performed on stages throughout Serbia and the broader Balkan region. His plays encompassed a wide range of genres, including comedies, historical dramas, and satirical works. Among his most famous plays are “Đido” (Grandfather), “Kir Janja” (Mr. Janja), and “Ženidba i udadba” (Marriage and Divorce). Sterija Popović’s plays often tackled social, political, and moral issues of his time. He blended elements of Serbian folklore and tradition with European literary influences, creating works that were both entertaining and thought-provoking. His sharp wit and keen observation of society earned him a reputation as a master of satire and comedy.
