Serbia Principality year 1869 1 para MNH stamps

There are two main periods to consider for stamps of the Kingdom of Serbia:

  • The Principality of Serbia (1817-1881): During this time, Serbia did not issue its own stamps. Instead, they used stamps from Austria or Turkey.
  • The Kingdom of Serbia (1882-1918): The kingdom of Serbia began issuing its own stamps in 1882. The designs typically featured Serbian royalty, coats of arms, or scenery. Some notable stamps from this period include:pen_spark
    • The 1894 issue featuring King Alexander I
    • The 1904 issue featuring King Peter I
    • The 1912 issue commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Serbian uprising

It’s important to note that during World War I (1914-1918), the Austro-Hungarian Empire occupied Serbia. They issued stamps of Bosnia and Herzegovina overprinted with “Serbien” for use in Serbia during this time.

After World War I, Serbia merged with other South Slavic states to form the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918-1945). Yugoslavia issued its own stamps, and Serbia ceased to do so.
