Germany Memel refers to the Memel Territory, also known as the KlaipÄ—da Region, which was a geopolitical area located in the northern part of East Prussia. Today, the territory is part of Lithuania and includes the city of KlaipÄ—da (formerly known as Memel). At the end of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles stipulated that the Memel Territory, despite its predominantly German population, would be detached from Germany and placed under the administration of the Allies. This decision was made to provide Lithuania with access to the Baltic Sea. From 1920 to 1939, the Memel Territory was governed by a League of Nations mandate, with France as the mandatory power. The area had a degree of autonomy but was not fully integrated into Lithuania.
