The 1950 FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil, was the fourth edition of the tournament and the first to be held after World War II. Brazil was selected as the host nation for the 1950 World Cup by FIFA in 1946, making it the first time the tournament was held in South America. The decision was made to rotate the tournament between Europe and the Americas. The tournament featured 13 teams divided into four groups: three groups of four teams and one group of three teams. The group winners advanced to the final group stage, known as the final round-robin stage.

The final match of the tournament, often referred to as the Maracanazo, was held at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The stadium, which was built for the World Cup, had a capacity of over 200,000 spectators at the time. The final match of the 1950 World Cup took place on July 16, 1950, between Brazil and Uruguay. Brazil only needed a draw to win the tournament, as they were leading the final round-robin group. However, Uruguay won the match 2-1, shocking the Brazilian fans and preventing Brazil from winning their first World Cup title. Uruguay’s victory in the 1950 World Cup final is considered one of the greatest upsets in football history. The winning goal was scored by Uruguayan forward Alcides Ghiggia in the 79th minute, silencing the overwhelmingly Brazilian crowd at the Maracanã Stadium.
